Before anyone says my title is too harsh, I have to ask…are they serious?
Today, the Donald Trump campaign announced that Theresa “Omarosa” Manigault, has been named director of African-American Outreach. Look, I’m not knocking the hustle but, who honestly believes that she is going to be of any use in this capacity?
Let’s break it down. First, it’s Trump…the same Trump that is polling at about 1% with African-Americans. I would suspect that a good portion of that 1% already work for the campaign so, this already doesn’t sound like money well-spent. He fares worse with African-Americans in the battleground states of Ohio and Pennsylvania. He polls at 0% in these states. With numbers like these, it’s little surprise that the governments in these states continue in their efforts to disenfranchise black voters but, that’s another discussion.
Second, it’s Omarosa. To actually draw in voters from a community, you need to have someone with clout in that community. She is not that person. Omarasa is like that cousin who, out-of-the-blue, wants to friend you on Facebook and you find that it’s because she’s now in Amway and wants to offer you a “business opportunity.” In other words, it’s all about what’s in it for her. She should be prepared for a lot of side-eyes.
But, you have to give her credit, she’s trying hard to deny the reality of his virtually non-existent African American support. When asked about it, she said this:
“I just spent an amazing weekend with African Americans for Trump, about 300 of them. I’m just wondering who they called because those numbers would be flawed according to the people who have come out to support, had an amazing faith-based service yet with African-Americans who support Donald Trump, had an amazing reception yesterday evening with African-Americans who support Trump. So I look at the data, but my reality is that I’m surrounded by people who to want see Donald Trump as the next president of the United States, who are African-American.”
Let me translate, “who are you gonna believe? Me or your lying eyes?” She ignores facts and data, which makes her the perfect person for the Trump campaign. I hope, for her sake, that there’s, at least, a good check in it for her.
Conservatives need to learn: it’s not about hiring a black face, running radio ads with people speaking in “black” dialects or continually using slavery analogies to tell us how stupid you think we are for not voting Republican. Perhaps, if you start by not running racists for President and adopting anti-everybody-but-rich-old-straight-white-guys policies, you might find that people would give you serious consideration.
